Why the Kenyan Podcast Game is getting A lot Of Pretend-interest
First of all let me come straight out and say this is not a hate post towards upcoming podcasters. If you want to get in the game and start your own, by all means please do it. You are a grown human being and are allowed to make your own decisions, even if it means just copying what everyone else is doing.
Kenya has this wild obsession with trying to get into trends just because they are working. It is human after all but as Kenyans we take it far sometimes. I write a lot about the music industry and entertainment industry and as Bloga Flani I have seen people come and go without building something sustainable.
Most creatives want to be seen without being creative. They borrow off of what is working at that moment and run with it. It is a good model for business but in the longrun things die down and we are left wondering where someone went. They woke up one day, announced they were doing a podcast, did a couple of episodes and went back to whatever they were doing.
The podcast side is just like any other trendy thing that has been taken up by Kenyans. Most creatives have rented out spaces and started shooting content. A few episodes into these podcasts and you can barely stomach what is being spewed.
We are a country that revels in mediocrity so when we find podcasts that actually feel intellectual we look for the ones that appeal to us. If you do a deep dive on what moves us as a country you will be amazed at what we like to consume on these podcasts. We have seen creatives come up with podcasts that had very positive social impact. At the same time we are getting a lot of podcasts with brain rot content.
We understand the need and rush for content monetization with a few coins being thrown here and there on these social media platforms, but the field seems saturated at the moment. Whenever you hear of a new podcasts getting launched you just loose your mind at times.
