Nazizi to Be Honored at Kickz N Barz 5th Edition for Her Impact on Kenyan Hip Hop and Urban Music

Kenyan music legend Nazizi will be celebrated on 28th March at the 5th edition of the hip hop showcase Kickz N Barz, an event that continues to recognize pioneers who helped shape the country’s urban music culture. The celebration will take place at K1 Klub House, one of Nairobi’s most iconic entertainment venues.

Nazizi’s contribution to Kenyan music spans more than two decades, making her one of the most influential female voices in the country’s urban soundscape. She first rose to prominence as a member of the legendary group Necessary Noize alongside Wyre and Bamzigi. At a time when Kenyan urban music was still finding its identity, the group blended hip hop, reggae, and dancehall with Swahili lyricism to create a sound that resonated with a new generation of listeners.

Through Necessary Noize, Nazizi helped normalize Kenyan urban music on mainstream radio and television. Songs from the group became youth anthems and played a significant role in shaping the early 2000s wave of locally produced hip hop and reggae. Her confidence on the mic and distinct dancehall delivery earned her recognition as one of the first women to command respect in a space largely dominated by male artists.

Beyond the group’s success, Nazizi built a strong solo career that cemented her reputation as the “First Lady of Kenyan Dancehall.” Her music has consistently carried themes of empowerment, cultural pride, and celebration of youth culture. Over the years, she has also used her platform as a performer, MC, and media personality to mentor younger artists and keep the spirit of Kenyan urban music alive.

The upcoming recognition at Kickz N Barz is therefore not just a celebration of an artist, but a tribute to an era that helped define the country’s modern music industry.

Kickz N Barz itself has quietly become one of the most important platforms dedicated to honoring Kenyan hip hop legends. In previous editions, the show has celebrated pioneers such as Abbas Kubaff, Cannibal, Sharama, Zakah and Kitu Sewer — artists who laid the foundation for the vibrant hip hop scene Kenya enjoys today.

By consistently shining a spotlight on these pioneers, Kickz N Barz is doing something the industry often forgets to do: preserving history. The celebration of Nazizi on March 28 is another reminder that the current generation of artists stands on the shoulders of legends who built the culture from the ground up.
